This scale may be used to resolve to C in the progression G 7–C (over G 7, which need not be notated G 7 ♭5 ♯5 ♭9 ♯9). The jazz minor scale contains all of the altered notes of the dominant seventh chord whose root is a semitone below the scale's tonic: "In other words to find the correct jazz minor scale for any dominant 7th chord simply use the scale whose tonic note is a half step higher than the root of the chord." For example, the G 7 chord and A ♭ jazz minor scale: the A ♭ scale contains the root, third, seventh, and the four most common alterations of G 7. The scale may be considered to originate in the use of extensions beginning with the seventh in jazz and thus the necessity to, "chromatically raise the diatonic 7th to create a stable, tonic sound," rather than use a minor seventh chord, associated with ii, for tonic. In Indian Carnatic music, the jazz minor scale corresponds to the Raga Gourimanohari. Whole, half, whole, whole, whole, whole, half The intervals between the notes of the jazz minor scale follow the sequence below: Thus, the jazz minor scale can be represented by the following notation: The grey coloured fingerings represent the fingerings for descending melodic minor – follow the black and white fingerings for ascending and replace the same ones with grey fingerings for descending.Audio playback is not supported in your browser. Please note that the scales here are not arranged by order of difficulty, but rather in a chronological order. Of course, if you have only been playing harmonic minor in the previous grades, this may be a bit overwhelming (you are required to learn all 12 melodic minor scales for grade 6), so it is always better to start learning them 1-2 grades earlier (after you have mastered the harmonic minor scales, to avoid confusion). So this is a compilation of all melodic minor scales. However, from grade 6 onwards, students are required to play melodic minor for their exams. I usually encourage students to choose harmonic minor as it is easier to learn and remember the fingering and notes (you do not need to remember 2 different sets of notes and fingering for ascending and descending). For grades 1 to 5, students are given a choice of playing either harmonic or melodic minor scales.
